The Surprise by the Tub: Stacy’s Cartier Gift from John
At Wimbledon, there was a private locker room where Stacy was relaxing in the tub with a washcloth over her eyes. When she removed the washcloth, she saw the watch in its box placed on the side of the tub. That’s how she remembers receiving the Cartier from John.

John McEnroe is a former professional tennis player known for his exceptional skill, fiery temperament, and memorable on-court rivalries. A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, he became famous for his shot-making artistry as well as his outspoken, often controversial behavior.
In the early 1980s, John McEnroe and Stacy Margolin were a high-profile couple—not just because McEnroe was the era’s most polarizing and talked-about athlete since Muhammad Ali’s famous stance against the Vietnam War. Margolin was a tennis star in her own right. As the top college player of the late 1970s, she was hailed as the next Chris Evert—a talented, appealing young champion. In 1979, one news service described her as having it all at age 19: a scholarship at a prestigious university, the collegiate singles title, a relationship with rising men’s tennis star John McEnroe, and striking blonde looks that even waiters admired.
